Three Milan airports, one transfer all the way to South Tyrol
Milan has three airports, and all three work well for Bolzano and the Dolomites. Malpensa is the intercontinental hub, about 50 km north-west of the city. Linate is the city airport, a few kilometres from the centre. Bergamo Orio al Serio sits right beside the A4 motorway, is the closest of the three to South Tyrol and is served by many low-cost airlines.

The route: the A4 towards Verona, then the Brenner motorway
From any Milan airport the route is essentially the same: the A4 motorway towards Brescia and Verona, or the parallel BreBeMi (A35) between Milan and Brescia when traffic makes it the better choice, then the A22 Brenner motorway north through the Adige valley, past Rovereto and Trento, to Bolzano.
The least predictable stretch is around Milan and on to Brescia, one of the busiest in Italy. If you can choose your flight, landing in late morning or early afternoon avoids the weekday rush hours. We leave the A22 at the exit that suits your valley: Egna-Ora for the Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa, Chiusa for Val Gardena, Bressanone for the Pusteria valley and Alta Badia.
Indicative driving times from the Milan airports
Times are without stops, in normal traffic. On summer weekends and winter Saturdays the A22 can slow down: when we confirm your transfer, we give you a realistic arrival time rather than an optimistic one.
- Bergamo Orio al Serio to Bolzano: about 240 km, about 2 h 30 – 3 h
- Milan Linate to Bolzano: about 280 km, about 3 h – 3 h 30
- Milan Malpensa to Bolzano: about 320 km, about 3 h 30 – 4 h
- For Merano add about 30–40 minutes, for Val Gardena about 45 minutes to 1 hour, for Alta Badia about 1 h – 1 h 30
A long drive, organised your way
Three or four hours is a long time after a flight, especially a long-haul one. On a private transfer you decide the stops: a coffee at a service area, a break for the children, a proper lunch instead of a sandwich on the run.
If you would like to turn the transfer into half a day out, the A4 runs right past Lake Garda: a stop in Sirmione or a walk through the centre of Verona can be built into the route, with a quote that reflects the extra time. Tell us when you get in touch and we will plan it.
Train or private transfer from Milan?
Trains run from Milano Centrale to Bolzano, a few direct and many with a change in Verona, taking around three hours or more. From Malpensa, though, you first need the Malpensa Express into the city, and from Bolzano you still need a bus or a car up to the valleys.
If you travel light and have time, the train to Bolzano works well: we can meet you at the station and drive you to your hotel. For families, groups of up to seven and anyone with skis or plenty of luggage, a direct airport-to-hotel transfer remains the simplest option, a private driver instead of a taxi for a long journey. If you have not booked your flight yet, also consider our Verona airport transfer, as Verona is closer to Bolzano.

Meeting you at Malpensa T1 or T2, Linate and Orio al Serio
Malpensa has two terminals: Terminal 2 is used by easyJet, and almost all other flights arrive at Terminal 1. Check your ticket and let us know which one applies, so Ferjy waits in the right arrivals hall with your name board. Linate and Bergamo each have a single terminal.
